Every English learner has a different need. Some people have an official exam approaching, others must prepare for an important interview.  Still others feel that while their writing is quite good, they are still deficient in speaking English, or listening, writing or reading. Many students need to learn how to improve their thesis paper, law document, newspaper article or email writing.  Some people just want to speak more fluidly and comfortably, others want to build their confidence at meetings, conferences and symposiums with native speakers of English and with other people who speak English as a second language.  For these reasons, class is adjusted, tailored and prepared for the needs and interests of each student. 

 

All of these students require more than just a conversation, more than an hour-long chat. In our classes, several aspects of English language learning are taken into account, including: 

 

• Clear English pronunciation (British, American and others)

• The real-world communication differences between English and Spanish, beyond simple translation

• How AI and evolving technologies help English language learning 

• How grammar is sometimes important

• Cultural differences between Spanish speakers and English speakers

• How English is used in the business world

• Idioms, colloquialisms and sayings 

• Technical, scientific, creative and journalistic writing 

• Translation and English polishing/editing

• Etymology and historical linguistics

• False friends and the problems of direct translation

• English in movies, fiction, music and poetry

• English for travel and tourism 

• Personality and language habits of each student

• The student's English level (in speaking, writing, listening or reading)

How do the classes work?

Each class is one to two hours long (your choice), held on a secure videoconference platform. And as most of us are busy with work or school, class schedules are flexible and organized in convenient pre-paid packages. In each class, we keep detailed notes in a privately shared file, which examine new words learned, possible mistakes, expert pronunciation clarification, parts of speech and how they are used, as well as examples of real, everyday use of English.  And the result is a growing confidence in real English communication, not just 60 minutes of repeating the same boring conversation gambits.   Questions are answered, whether they be abstract (“How can I really say ¿este tío me está dando largas’ in English?), or more concrete grammatical questions like “How can I say Llevo 7 años en Madrid" or “ I see the word ‘get’ everywhere in English. What does it mean?” or "Are conditionals and passives really important?" or "What exactly do I need to know to pass my upcoming Cambridge exam."
